Clinton sailed to an impressive victory in Kentucky last night while Obama all but declared victory in the primary race. The question everyone is asking, what does she want exactly? Some argue that Clinton is trying to force herself on the ticket, while others say that her debt and a potential rerun in 2012 keeps her going. Her aides are being coy about her intentions but Clinton is definitely trying to maximize her leverage as the new champion of the working class and women.
Hillary Clinton is trapped by history and the Clinton legacy is at stake-as important she does not want to disappoint her legion of followers who have invested so much in her candidacy. The campaign is mired in debt and as she reassures her supporters, she marches on a path with a cloudy endgame. Party officials, especially the superdelegates, are clearly nervous at the growing chasm between the two camps and do not want to be blamed for losing the white house in what is supposed to be a Democratic year.
Its all about the delegates and the math is the math. Sen. Obama is less than 65 delegates away from clinching the nomination and barring a monumental collapse, he will be the nominee on June 3rd and the party will rally around him. There has been talk about a possible Supreme Court appointment when it becomes available, Justice Stevens is nearing 90 years old and may retire in the next few years. There would be concerns however, from both the right and the left on how exactly she would align herself on some issues. A Clinton as a Supreme Court Justice? You remember that Bill Clinton was disbarred by the justices to ensure that he would never serve amongst them; can you imagine Scalia and Thomas welcoming Hillary as one of their colleagues? Oh.. the irony!
No matter what happens or how many obituaries have been written about her political demise, Hillary Clinton will be a fixture in American politics for years to come, but the path towards the presidency is entering its final act.
There is some part of her that still thinks that she can win or at least guarantee an Obama loss without being viewed as the culprit. Incidently, she travels to Florida today to remind voters of their disenfranchisement.
I doubt any of this will work, the Clintonian Dynasty, and its dominance in Democratic presidential politics, are at an end.
