Rumors abound that in a few hours, Gregg will be nominated for Commerce Secretary and Democratic Governor John Lynch could appoint Republican J. Bonnie Newman. To be fair, I don't know much about Miss Newman or her qualifications, but can you imagine a GOP governor even hinting at appointing a Democrat with one seat away from a filibuster proof majority?
What is the Democratic reaction? HuffPo is reporting: Judd Gregg's Replacement has Democrats Worried. Huh? Instead of applying extreme pressure on the Governor, they are leaking in the press that they are worried. Democrats never cease to amaze me. A GOP governor would be threatened with excommunication from the party if he even dared to mention appointing a Democrat.
Lynch is a beloved political figure in NH who enjoys a 70% approval rating, and it has been reported that he was weighing a bid for Senate if Sen. Gregg decided to retire in 2010. It will be interesting to see if he in fact names a Republican to the seat. I sure hope that Newman is a trial balloon...stay tuned.
