The reviews are in, the president hit it out of the park last night, Jindal? Not so much. Isn't it refreshing to finally have someone who can communicate so effortlessly? President Obama did a masterful job last night explaining in the most simplest terms, how the stimulus would work and why we desperately need it.
My favorite line of the night?
"Dropping out of high school is no longer an option, you are not just quitting on yourself but you are quitting on your country." The president later declared "we are not quitters!"
The Republicans were squirming in their seats and at times, didn't know whether to sit still or cheer.
Wapo said it best:
Washington: What was with the Republicans? They seemed not to know when to cheer, when to stand up, when to keep still -- confusion reigned, no?
Robert G. Kaiser: Wasn't that fascinating? I saw a real change as the speech unfolded. Initially the Republicans tried to sit on their hands and avoid cheering for things they disapproved of. But I sensed that as the speech went on they must have realized that he was effectively reaching his audience, and began to act as though they felt they should join the cheering.
Still, we could be witnessing a paradigm shift in American politics where stale GOP ideas are losing favor with the electorate. Some conservatives see the writing on the wall:
Here is Jonathan Rauch from the National Journal:
Conservatives suspected that something irreversible was happening: that the sheer immensity of President Obama's fiscal and financial interventions may permanently change the size of government and the shape of post-Reagan conservatism
Unfortunately, the congressional GOP is tone deaf and clueless. They've transformed themselves into the party of no. Bobby Jindal did not have a chance last night and was not ready for prime time.
